Flat Showing

What Is Showing?

Showing horses is an activity that any horse, pony and individual can get involved in.  Some classes require the horse or pony to be ridden, while others require the horse or pony to be led (in-hand).

There are classes for all types and ages of horses and ponies including many breed-specific classes, some of which are linked to the relevant breed and showing societies.    In hand, the horses and ponies are assessed to ensure that they are true to type, according to the breed standard, and fit for purpose with movement, conformation and overall appearance all taken into account

In ridden classes the judge will again assess the suitability of the animal to carry out its proposed duties, for example a hunter should be sufficiently sound, mannerly and well balanced to follow hounds across country for many hours at a time, whereas a riding pony should have impeccable manners, movement and conformation to safely enable a child to participate in a range of activities.

‘I genuinely believe that you can make an average horse look like the best horse in the class with a few tricks of the eye’ Dan went on to say before telling us that he is always more than happy to offer tips and feedback to all competitors So, if you have any questions for Dan over the show, don’t be show, he will be happy to help and offer you his expert advice.

‘I am most looking forward to the championships and the overall Supreme as it is great fun picking the best of the best and seeing the joy on the faces of those who get that lucky top spot. I may be known for my riding horses, hunters and cobs but bring me a top class native or a hairy coloured pony and I won’t hesitate to have that as my winner’ .

‘Being a Jersey boy originally, it’s lovely to have been invited back again to judge on home turf’ Said Dan adding that he is ‘really looking forward to seeing all of your lovely horses and ponies at what will undoubtedly be a well run, supportive show, run by a lovely team who are always so welcoming when I visit.

All about our Showing Judge Kirsty Brown & Confirmation Judge Dan Williams

Kirsty Brown - "My experience of backing, producing and showing horses spans over 35 years. I have been very lucky to partner some amazing horses, culminating in some great achievements and titles. My most memorable was HOYS 2009 where I rode Maiad to stand top of the line!

I was appointed to The Arab Horse Society judges ridden panel in 2001, In hand panel a few years later and in recent years trained as a D.C. I am also a very experienced ring steward.

I have been privileged to judge at many of our National and County shows, for both Ridden and in hand classes, including The Royal Highland, Royal Cheshire County and AHS National shows. One special appointment was for H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, where I was honoured to judge the ridden Arabian classes at a 3 day festival in Abu Dhabi.

When I am judging, I like to see a class full of type and quality. I don’t like to guess what class I am judging!

I have a strong bias for a great walk. Also, a good gallop, moving up through the gears, between hand leg, smoothly and with control. A relaxed and happy partnership is a must and showmanship is everything.!

Dislikes are rushed paces, over complicated shows poor changes of rein and bad sportsmanship.

I feel honoured to be invited to your beautiful island to judge the 2022 JHOYS and look forward to seeing you all in the ring! Good luck and let’s have some fun!"

Dan Williams - Jersey born but now Hertfordshire based, Dan Williams is an experienced showing producer who has enjoyed much success with a variety of horses over the year. Best known for his two time HOYS Supreme Champion, Broadshard Simplicity, he has gone on to successfully produce a number of clients horses as well as source and breed some top quality horses of his own.

We spoke to Dan who said he ‘loves the elegance of a riding horse and a hack’ but says ‘you can’t beat the power and speed you feel when galloping a hunter or a cob.’

‘Manners are key for me’ says Dan who tells us that he will be looking for rideability, manners and way of going this weekend. ‘Turnout is so important too, so do your homework, watch the YouTube videos and don’t wear a stock, no matter what anyone tells you’ he follows with a laugh.
